Fowler's Toad

Adults: Fowler's Toads have large, elongate parotoid glands, and the large and dark spots on the back usually encircle 3 or more warts. There are no enlarged warts on lower leg. Dorsal coloration is variable, but is usually gray, sometimes infused with green. Underneath they are immaculate white or yellowish (but males with dark throats).

Distribution: Broadly distributed in eastern North America, overlapping the range of the American Toad, but the Fowler's Toad does not range as far north. Southern New England west through Iowa and south.

Habitat: Streams, ponds, and lakes; often encountered a long distance from water. Typically in lowland areas where the soil is sandy or well-drained.

Voice: A low-pitched nasal "w-a-a-h" lasting several seconds, like a sheep bleating in the distance.play audio
